No Oral Glutathione Supplements for Me – But, Thanks Anyway

No one wants to get old. Well here’s a newsflash, no one has ever really offered you a choice and no one is about to either. There is no magic anti aging supplement. But if you’re been doing your homework you’ve found that while you’re going to grow old, it’s not an unrealistic goal to keep your body functioning as well as possible so that you can enjoy more of the years you do manage to accumulate. Antioxidants will help a lot, but sadly one of the most important, Glutathione, isn’t really effective when you take it orally.

So, Why Do You Care About Glutathione?

A tri-peptide of the amino acids glycine, glutamine and cysteine, Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that you can find in every one of the trillions of cells in your body. If there is a problem, Glutathione is at the “scene of the crime” ready to do its voodoo. That’s only one of the very special qualities of this antioxidant that is manufactured by your body.

Many people have never heard of Glutathione and many never will. That’s more than a little ironic when you consider the almost universal awareness of better known but less powerful antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, which are (by the way) the most abundant water and fat soluble antioxidants we have. But without Glutathione they don’t work as well and on top of that, Glutathione helps to repair DNA, enhances the immune system and hugely supports the detoxifying role of the liver. Glutathione is truly the Master Antioxidant.

Increasing your serum levels of Glutathione is a good health strategy. Studies have quite clearly shown that some of the best known preventable diseases associated with aging, like Osteoporosis, type II diabetes and high blood pressure are all associated with a decline in Glutathione levels.

As we leave our twenties (and really start to need it!) our body slows down its production of Glutathione, which is why many well intentioned and health conscious people are looking for information on glutathione supplements. But a supplement is not the way to go.

The problem is that in order for Glutathione to make it into the bloodstream and be transportable to the cells in our organs, it first must make it through our gastro intestinal system. But taken orally, it’s destroyed.

But you have other options and I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that 4-5 servings of fresh vegetables like spinach, asparagus, broccoli and avocado (yes, you’re right. Avocado is a fruit) will help support your body’s ability to manufacture more glutathione. Other natural sources for the right nutrients – precursors- include whey protein, selenium, and turmeric and milk thistle.

Your other choice is to consider supplementing with a glutathione precursor, which is a product that provides your body with the materials it needs to increase its production output of glutathione. After all, if your body is perfectly capable of making something, doesn’t it make sense to help it do what nature intended?
