Zed, played by the notoriously funny Jack Black is an ineffective hunter that lives with a primitive tribe. Oh, played by Michael Cera is his best friend and comes under constant ridicule for showing various signs of feminism. Maya, played by June Diane Raphael is Zeds love interest, while Eema, played by Juno Temple, is Ohs love interest. However, both of them have no such spark that would let the girls fall for either for them. This is when Zed eats the forbidden fruit and is then coerced into leaving. The movie then tells the story of their travels. There are a lot of hilarious moments in this part when they meet all kinds of people from meeting arguing brothers to a son sacrificing father and their journey culminates in the horrific city of Sodom wherein they must rescue their love interests.
The real plot of the Year one movie begins when Zed eats a forbidden fruit and is therefore made to leave the tribe and fend for himself and Oh joins him. Their trials and tribulations during their travels make up the rest of the movie. Their travels take them to different places and make them meet all sorts of people. The evil and terrible city of Sodom is the last destination in their journey and it is in here that they must save their lovers from danger.
Jack Black carries the Year one movie on his shoulders throughout and there is something about him that is cryptic, yet so satisfying. His style can never be deciphered and is a whole lot of joy to watch. He can make lines that would make a 5 year old laugh and lines that make a clever and witty playwright laugh have the same effect on either.
Not only does Black do a fabulous job in the movie, his more than able co-stars Cera, June and Eema also act wonderfully. Both June and Black complement each other to the T. Other notable actors include Oliver Platt, Vinnie Jones and many others. The screenwriters of the Year One movie are from the hugely successful sitcom, The Office and it is no wonder that they deliver yet again.
